Charles has been working in electronic music for 12 years and brings a lot of experience to the table. Starting out as a DJ and producer, he spent years working on his own project. He has already drawn attention to himself with numerous releases on well-known international labels. As a result, he already played on big stages such as the Fusion Festival or the Sonar Festival in Barcelona. In 2019 he founded MPI together with Tim in order to be able to pass on his wealth of experience to third parties. Due to his experience, his way of working is designed to be creative and highly application-oriented. So he knows exactly what is important in a production, both before and after it is released.

Brings his many years of experience as a lecturer / tutor for electronic music production, Ableton Live and DJ-ing. In addition, he does not avoid hardware and technology. On the contrary: As a trained physicist, you can go into depth. From science he learned to explain complex relationships simply, but not to neglect necessary subtleties and definitions. Very familiar with physical terms, frequencies and the why behind them. Since the beginning of his studies he has connected the two worlds of physics and music. It is wonderful for him to be able to pass this fusion on to other people as knowledge through the MPI.
Our studio is located in the northern part of Cologne-Ehrenfeld. First and foremost, we produce our own music here and realize commercial projects. So it is not a studio specially designed for school lessons, but an environment in which you can work professionally and feel comfortable. Our studio sessions and possible additional services for you take place here. Technically, the studio consists of important standards of professional acoustics, top-class monitoring and an exquisite selection of synthesizers and controllers.
When you come to us, our infrastructure enables you to connect your system to ours immediately. So we work on your system in our professional environment. You decide for yourself how much hardware you want to contribute. It is especially important for experienced producers to stick to their own infrastructure. Here is a complete course on modern music production from getting started to exporting finished tracks. This course is completely online. The content is divided into individual modules, all of which are immediately available. So you can learn at your own pace and order. There is no time limit. Access remains as long as we exist.
Each module contains lessons from videos, texts and downloads. You can continue working offline with exercises, samples and handouts and deepen what you have learned. Depending on your BASIC and PRO membership, you will receive online support and other accompanying interactions (see next question).
It is particularly important to us not to withhold any details of professional production from you. Many online courses and masterclasses are time-consuming and hold back crucial steps and tools. We want to give you the added value here that you deserve. That’s why you learn at MPI primarily by looking directly over the shoulder of the professionals. We show you everything as we do ourselves.
BASIC and PRO are the two possible enrollment plans for our MPI online campus. With BASIC access, you are on your own as a self-learner, but you get exactly the same content as PRO members. Our offer is aimed at beginners as well as advanced and budding professionals. There is generally no age limit to start making music. Access to the world of music is open to everyone. We won’t change anything about that. So don’t be a shame to get help with this.

The requirements nowadays are more than simple. This makes it possible to produce music with a standard laptop and reasonable headphones. This is particularly interesting as a DJ or singer / songwriter.
Of course you need certain software. One speaks here at least of a digital audio production environment. The common name for this comes of course from English: Digital Audio Workstation – DAW for short. These are even available free of charge, but professional DAWs generally have to be paid for.
If you plan to learn to make music with us but don’t have a laptop / computer and / or headphones yet, you should buy these things at least to start with. There is an external link on Computer Requirements to a nice English article from Ableton on the subject.
For special purchase advice, simply contact us and we will discuss your situation personally.
We use Ableton Live 11 ourselves for our own projects. Nevertheless, you can transfer the complete knowledge to any other DAW. Our content is not tied to a single manufacturer. It is always useful to get as much out of the box as possible. But if there are ways in terms of sound technology to sound better than Ableton Live’s internal devices, we will use this – and show you too. We therefore work with different manufacturers and plugins. We may also offer the basic DAW knowledge for other DAWs in the future.
An advantage for you with external plugins is that they look exactly the same in different DAWs and can be operated. However, this does not mean that we will force you to buy certain plugins! We would be happy to show you alternatives and workarounds. And if it should not work without the one “master tool”, we have ensured with our partner network that you benefit from the best possible conditions.
The content is currently being explained on our online campus using Ableton Live 11. The details of Version Live 11 can generally be transferred very easily to the older versions 10 and 9. Optical differences are marginal. The access to Ableton Live 11 is very beginner-friendly and is explained in detail. So you won’t have any problems getting used to this DAW.
Of course, musical talent can bring you ahead faster than usual in certain areas, but at the end of the day it counts to bring diligence and work into the matter. And in principle anyone can do this with the necessary know-how. Talent is therefore a valuable companion, but not a guarantee for success.
Our effect is that you benefit from our experience and the MPI learning concept and, above all, save valuable time: You learn in a short time what you might otherwise only be able to develop in months or even longer. Your starting level doesn’t matter.
It usually takes a few months to finish exporting your first track. Daily to weekly learning of the content is definitely recommended. Dealing with the matter itself promotes your knowledge to the maximum. If you deal with our content regularly, you will be able to count on a finished track after 3-6 months. Talk to us beforehand so that we can give you a realistic picture of the situation. It will be fine!
